Why Have a Breast Ultrasound?

Breast ultrasounds are normally performed in response to abnormalities such as lumps and swellings detected by a doctor during a physical exam. Breast ultrasounds can also be used as a supplement to a mammography examination. Breast tissue is relatively sensitive to radiation so ultrasound is an excellent way of assessing abnormalities as there is no radiation and so no risks.

Who performs the examination?

Ultrasounds are performed by specialist ultrasound staff called sonographers. All X-RAY & IMAGING sonographers have a minimum of 10 years ultrasound experience.

What happens during the examination?

In most cases you will be required to remove your clothing above the waist and wear a gown provided. The sonographer will apply a cool gel to the area being examined and pass a marker pen shaped instrument called a transducer over the gel. Images of your breast tissue will appear on a screen in front of you. Once the sonographer is satisfied with the accuracy of the images the examination is over.

The images are reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist and are printed for you to take with you to your next doctor's appointment.

In most cases the whole process takes less than an hour from entering the building and leaving with your results.

Is the examination painful or uncomfortable?

Other than the initial cool feeling of the gel there should be no pain or discomfort felt during a breast ultrasound examination.

What does it show?

Breast ultrasounds can show the density of lumps in the breast tissue. Lumps that appear symmetrical and are filled with fluid are benign cysts. Lumps that are solid, or appear to have floating solid parts may require further investigation.

Do I need to do any preparation for a Breast Ultrasound?

On the day of your appointment do not use any deodorant or talcum-powder as the particles can reduce the clarity of the images.

Where can I have this examination and how much does it cost?

You can have a breast ultrasound at any X-RAY & IMAGING practice. As with all our general ultrasound examinations, X-RAY & IMAGING bulk bill ($0) all patients entitle to Medicare, DVA or Work Cover who have a doctor's referral with a clinical reason for the examination.

Do I have to book an appointment?

Yes. Ultrasounds appointments are often booked several days in advance so it is important to call as soon as possible to book your appointment. Call your nearest X-RAY & IMAGING practice to receive this examination bulk billed.
