Why Have a Renal Ultrasound?
Renal ultrasounds are usually used to assess the bladder, kidneys and other related structures. The real time images created by the ultrasound machine can identify stones, tumours and other urinary disorders. Ultrasounds are completely safe and cause no pain or discomfort and so are usually the first tests to be taken to understand why symptoms are being experienced.
Who performs the examination?
Ultrasounds are performed by specialist staff called sonographers. All X-RAY & IMAGING sonographers have a minimum of 10 Years ultrasound experience.
What happens during the examination?
In most cases you will be asked to remove any clothing that obstructs your pelvic area and wear one of the gowns provided. Once changed, the sonographer will apply a cool gel to your skin in the area being examined. Once this has been applied, the sonographer will pass a marker shaped instrument called a transducer over the gel creating images of internal organs that appear on a screen in front of you. This may take several minutes. Once the sonographer is happy with the accuracy of the images the examination is over. The images are then assessed and reported on by a radiologist.
Once you have your film and report you are finished. Remember to take your film and report to your next doctor's appointment.
In most cases the whole process takes less than an hour from entering the building and leaving with your results.
What does it show?
Renal ultrasounds are very good at showing the presence of kidney stones, renal blockages, cysts and tumours. This can provide important information as to why possible symptoms exist and kidney function.
Do I need to do any preparation for a Renal Ultrasound?
Yes. There are 2 things you should do before your appointment.
In order to obtain precise pictures you should fast for 4 hours prior to your appointment.
This procedure also requires you to have a full bladder so it is advised that you begin drinking a litre of water around an hour and a half before your examination and not urinate until the renal ultrasound has been performed.
Where can I have this examination and how much does it cost?
Renal ultrasounds are performed at all X-RAY & IMAGING practices and, like all our procedures are bulk billed ($0) to all Medicare, DVA and Work Cover patients who have a doctor's referral.
Do I have to book an appointment?
Yes. As with all Ultrasounds, you are required to book an appointment several days before in most cases. Call your closest centre now to book an appointment.
